This carving depicts the great journey as interpreted partly in narrative and partly in sculptural form. I have endeavoured to represent the three guardian waves. Two are quite noticeable, as one wave opposes another. The third is depicted on the surface using the Puhoro design (in reference to ocean elements.) I relate the waves to the hull of the revered waka (canoe) Nga Toki Matawhaorua, and in doing so I celebrate this important time in history for the people of the northern tribes.
